7 Unshakable Truths for Life's Journey: Class of 2025 Senior Sunday

In a world that often celebrates instant gratification and easy wins, the path of true faith stands in stark contrast. It's not all highlight reels and happy playlists. A vibrant, enduring faith will test you, cost you something, and ultimately shape you into the person God desires you to be.

Consider the story of U.S. Marine Sergeant Rob Jones. In 2010, while on patrol in Afghanistan, Rob stepped on a hidden IED, losing both legs above the knees. Many might have accepted a quiet life on the sidelines after such trauma. Not Rob. He saw it as just the beginning. He went on to win a bronze medal in rowing at the 2012 London Paralympics. Then, in 2017, he embarked on an incredible journey – running 31 marathons in 31 different cities over 31 consecutive days, all on prosthetic legs. Rob's goal? To raise awareness for wounded veterans and prove that trauma doesn't get the last word.

Rob's powerful statement resonates deeply: "I wanted to be known by how I endured." This echoes the message found in 2 Timothy, where the Apostle Paul writes to his protégé Timothy about the importance of enduring faith. Paul, writing from prison, abandoned by friends and facing possible execution, wasn't inviting Timothy to a comfortable faith. Instead, he was calling him to something greater – a faith that costs something but is infinitely worth it.

In this passage, Paul outlines seven unshakable truths about faith, using the imagery of soldiers, athletes, and farmers. These truths offer invaluable guidance for anyone navigating life's challenges:

1. Be strong in grace, not in self
We often feel pressure to be strong all the time, but true strength comes from relying on God's grace. When we're weak, that's when Christ's power works through us most powerfully. We're not sent into the world empty-handed; God's grace goes before us, empowering us when we can't generate the grit ourselves.

2. You carry a legacy
In faith, we inherit God's story, the gospel story, and our own faith journey. We must handle this legacy wisely, neither distorting it nor letting it end with us. Jesus is worth sharing with others.

3. Faith will cost you
Choosing Jesus won't always get you likes, retweets, or invitations. It may cost you in three ways:
   - The two-kingdom life: We're called to live for one kingdom – God's.
   - Time and profits: Living with Christ-like integrity may cost promotions or partnerships.
   - Social and emotional costs: The narrow way can lead to times of loneliness or rejection.

4. Endure with Christ-centered confidence
Endurance isn't about perfection; it's about perseverance. God's unconditional love is founded on grace. Never let your behavior stop you from seeking God or attending church. His grace is sufficient, no matter where you've been.

5. Build your life on truth, not on the noise of the world
Guard your words and be discerning about the voices you listen to. The loudest voices aren't always the truest. Don't just scroll for truth – study it deeply.

6. Be a vessel of honor
Choose to live a life that's useful to God. Don't just get busy, popular, or successful. Instead, serve people, bless others, and be a light for Christ.

7. Run towards what's right
What you chase shapes who you become. Be intentional about the direction of your pursuits, as they will define your life.

These truths remind us that while faith may cost us, it shapes us into who we truly desire to be deep down. The way of Jesus isn't always easy, but it's always worth it.

Think of faith like farming. There's no immediate crop for farmers; they trust processes they don't control and growth they can't immediately see. Similarly, as believers, we trust the unseen work of God in our lives. As long as we stick with it and endure, growth will come.

Or consider the athlete who trains rigorously for months, sacrificing time and living within strict boundaries. Success in faith, like in athletics, requires discipline and a willingness to forgo short-term pleasures for long-term gain.

The soldier analogy reminds us that we can't live a divided life, trying to serve two masters. We must choose to live fully for God's kingdom, even when it means going against the crowd or facing moments of loneliness.

As we navigate life's challenges, whether we're stepping into new chapters or facing unexpected trials, these unshakable truths offer a foundation to build upon. They remind us that our faith journey isn't about perfection, but about persistent trust in God's grace and a willingness to endure.

Rob Jones didn't let trauma define him; instead, he chose to be defined by how he endured. In the same way, we have the opportunity to let our faith shape our response to life's adversities. We can choose to be people who respond to challenges with purpose, who build our lives on truth rather than fleeting trends, and who run towards what's right even when it's difficult.

Remember, you're not alone in this journey. God's grace goes before you, empowering you to live a life of enduring faith. Whether you're facing major life transitions, grappling with doubt, or simply trying to navigate daily challenges, these truths can serve as a compass, guiding you towards a faith that not only endures but thrives.

So, let's embrace these unshakable truths. Let's be strong in grace, carry our spiritual legacy with care, accept that faith will cost us something, endure with confidence in Christ, build our lives on God's truth, strive to be vessels of honor, and consistently run towards what's right. By doing so, we allow our lives to become beacons of Christ's light, always ready for God to use us in powerful ways.

In a world that often values ease and instant results, may we be known as people who endure, who persist in faith, and who shine brightly for God's kingdom.
